How Janamat Works

Understanding how we collect, verify, and amplify public opinion in Nepal. Your questions answered.

Getting Started

Janamat is a mobile app where you can: • Share your opinions on topics that matter to Nepal • See what other Nepalis think – both in Nepal and abroad • Discuss important topics with other verified Nepali citizens Think of it as a digital town square where every Nepali voice can be heard.
Any Nepali citizen with: • A valid Nagarikta (citizenship certificate) • A registered Nagarik app user • Vote in polls about social, political, and community issues • An email address registered with the Nagarik app This includes Nepali citizens living abroad (diaspora).
Yes, completely free.
No. The app is designed to be as simple as any other social media app. All the technical parts work in the background - you don’t need to understand them to participate.

Account & Verification

1. Go to janamat.app 2. Sign up with your phone number. Use the password you have for Nagarik app 3. Start participating
The Nagarik app is the government’s official digital ID system. We use it to confirm you’re a real Nepali citizen, which ensures: • Only real Nepalis participate (no fake accounts) • Each person gets only one • Your voice is counted fairly
1. You first need to create a verified profile on the Nagarik app 2. When you start verification on Janamat, we ask Nagarik a simple question: “Does a real, verified Nepali citizen like this exist?” 3. Nagarik confirms this by sending us a cryptographic proof (not your personal data). 4. Using this, Janamat creates a zero-knowledge proof that you are a verified citizen. 5. We then send a one-time password (OTP) to the email you registered with Nagarik to sure you are the owner of that account. 6. You enter the OTP to confirm it’s really you 7. You’re verified!
Nothing! Here’s what we DON’T store: • Your name • Your citizenship number • Your address • Your date of birth • Your photo We only confirm that you are a verified Nepali citizen. After verification, we don’t keep your personal details.
No. Your identity is completely private. Nobody, not even Janamat can connect your votes or opinions to your real identity. For us, you’re just a alphanumeric string or a nickname (if you choose to) unless you willingly share it with screenshots and post it on other social media platforms.
We use something called “zero-knowledge proof” (explained below). In simple terms: we can prove you’re a verified Nepali without knowing who you are. This lets us block duplicate accounts while keeping you anonymous.

Using the App

• Vote in polls: Answer questions about topics affecting Nepal • Create polls: Ask questions and see what others think • Join discussions: Comment and share perspectives • See results: View real-time poll results from verified Nepalis
Anything important to Nepali society: • Social issues (education quality, healthcare access) • Infrastructure (roads, electricity, water) • Policy questions (what should the government prioritize?) • Community decisions (local development projects) • Cultural topics
The polls are “non-binding” - this means: • Results show what Nepalis think • They help measure public opinion • They DO NOT automatically become law or policy • Government can see and consider them, but they’re not official decisions Think of it like a national survey that everyone can see and trust.
You can create polls on most topics, but we don’t allow: • Hate speech or discrimination • Harassment of individuals • Illegal activities • Misinformation or false claims We want healthy discussions that bring Nepalis together, not divide them
Yes! If you’re a Nepali citizen living abroad and have verified through the Nagarik app, you can fully participate. This is one of Janamat’s key features - giving voice to the diaspora

Privacy & Security

Three ways: 1. Anonymous participation: We can’t link your votes to your identity 2. No data storage: We don’t keep a database of personal information 3. Zero-knowledge proof: We verify you’re Nepali without learning anything about yo
Imagine you want to prove you’re old enough to vote without showing your ID card. Zero-knowledge proof is like that - it’s a mathematical way to prove something is true (you’re a Nepali citizen) without revealing the information itself (your name, citizenship number, etc.). It’s like showing you have the key to a lock without showing the key itself.
No. Never. We don’t collect enough data to sell in the first place.
Even if someone hacked our system, they would find: • Poll results (which are public anyway) • No personal information (because we don’t store it) • No way to connect votes to individuals Your privacy is built into the system itself, not just protected by passwords.
No. Not even the government can see who voted for what. The system is designed so that nobody - including us - can trace votes back to individuals.

Technical Concepts

Blockchain is like a public record book that: • Everyone can read • Nobody can erase or change • No single person controls When poll results are recorded on blockchain, everyone can verify they’re real and haven’t been tampered with.
For three reasons: 1. Transparency: Anyone can verify poll results are real 2. Tamper-proof: Results can’t be changed or manipulated 3. No central control: No single organization controls the data
We use Solana - a blockchain that is: • Fast (handles many votes quickly) • Cheap (costs almost nothing to use) • Environmentally friendly (uses very little energy)
No. You don’t need to own, buy, or understand cryptocurrency to use Janamat.
Instead of one company or government controlling all the data (centralized), the information is spread across many computers (decentralized). Benefits: • No single point of failure • Nobody can shut it down • More resistant to manipulation
“On-chain” means the data is recorded on the blockchain (the public record book). When we say results are “on-chain,” it means they’re publicly verifiable and permanent.
“Sybil attack” is when someone creates many fake accounts to manipulate results. Anti-Sybil protection means our system prevents this by: • Requiring real Nagarik verification • Ensuring one person = one account • Blocking fake or duplicate identities

Results & Transparency

Yes, for three reasons: 1. Only verified Nepalis vote: Every participant is confirmed through Nagarik 2. Publicly verifiable: Results are recorded on blockchain where anyone can check them 3. Tamper-proof: Once recorded, results cannot be changed
It’s a simple page showing: • All active polls • Real-time results • Total participants Think of it as a public information board that everyone can check.

About The Project

Janamat is built by Superteam Nepal - Nepal’s largest community of blockchain developers and builders. We’re part of a global network across 20+ countries.
To solve several problems: 1. Give voice to the diaspora: Millions of Nepalis abroad have no way to participate in national discussions 2. Measure real public opinion: Government needs reliable data on what citizens actually think 3. Build trust: Show that digital systems can be both private and verifiable 4. Modernize civic participation: Bring Nepal’s democratic processes into the digital age
No. Janamat is completely non-partisan. We don’t favor any political party, candidate, or ideology. Our goal is to provide a neutral platform for all Nepalis.
“Non-binding” means the poll results are informational, not official decisions. They show what people think, but they don’t automatically become law or policy. Think of it like: • A survey that everyone can trust • A way to measure public opinion • A tool to inform decision-makers But not: • An official election • A government referendum • A legally binding vote
No. This is not a replacement for any official government process. It’s a separate platform for public discussion and opinion sharing.
Our target is 100,000 verified Nepali users who can: • Participate in transparent public discussions • Help measure what Nepalis really think • Bridge the gap between Nepal and its diaspora • Demonstrate how digital democracy can work

Troubleshooting

Common issues: • Make sure the email in Nagarik app is correct and accessible • Check your spam folder for the OTP email • Ensure you have internet connection • Make sure the sim is in your name. If still not working, contact our support team.
Make sure you’re logged in • Check if the poll is still active • Ensure you haven’t already voted on that poll (one vote per person per poll)
No you can't change or modify votes.
Check your internet connection • Close and reopen the app • Clear app cache (in phone settings)

Currently, the code is not open source. However, the poll results and voting records are publicly verifiable on the blockchain, which provides transparency about outcomes even though the underlying code is proprietary.
